Pure Michigan Childhood

While taking a walk down digital memory lane this morning I came across an old photo of my brother and I with our cousins from at least sixteen years ago. We were camping together as two families, like we did each year, and I believe this photo was taken next to Taqhuamenon Falls. I love that we are all posing as awkwardly as possible at another camera, and that our parents seemed to be trying to disguise us as Canadian baseball fans.

And yes, I am the one on the right wearing the American Girls hat and the boys' hunter green sweatshirt. I miss spending summers out on the lake (any lake, honestly) or hiking through the woods. I can never get enough of that stuff. The best way to experience summer in Michigan is to get outside and completely surround yourself with everything it has to offer. Dorky outfits are not mandatory.

Backyard Salad

It rained for most of the day yesterday, so when I saw sunshine this morning I knew I had to make it outside and get some chores done. I love seeing our yard slowly come together as a place where we really want to be.

I finally finished planting the flowers and veggies that I bought on Flower Day at Eastern Market last month, thanks to some hand-me-down flower pots and a few bags of dirt.

My favorite purchases from Flower Day would have to be lettuce. I bought two different "salad bowls" for about $7 and finally transplanted them into a prettier pot this afternoon in hopes that they'll get their grow on even more. I'm hoping I didn't cause any serious damage in the process.

So far we've made about a dozen salads from these plants and there should be many more to come. When we're ready to prepare one, I trim a variety of the stalks of lettuce about two inches from their base and give them a quick rinse in my salad spinner. The leaves continue to grow back if you trim them properly and keep them watered. I love not having to worry about store-bought lettuce going bad in the fridge!

Layla insisted on being in all of the photos. She's a snuggly little diva.

Our Wishing Tree

Last night Aaron and I stopped at a local nursery to buy some plants for our backyard. As we were making our way to the shrub section I asked him if he could believe that our first anniversary is just a few months away. He replied that it feels like we've been married for much longer, which I hope is a good thing. As we approach the one year mark I thought it would be fun to finally share a few small details from our wedding!

I was never really wild about the idea of using a guest book at the reception, so I tried to come up with something different that would also give our friends and family something to do while they were walking around the party. I found several variations of wishing trees on Pinterest and decided to put my own spin on the idea. You know how I feel about things that grow...

For the tree itself I used branches from the trees in my backyard, cut them to size, and spray painted them to match the frames and other accessories on the table. I found a tall vase at our local thrift store, filled it with stones and placed the branches inside. We tied a piece of burlap around the vase (yes, we had one of those burlap/mason jar weddings), and bada-bing, bada-boom... wishing tree.

Keeping with the tree theme, I thought it would make sense for our guests to leave their handwritten notes on leaves. I ordered 25 sheets of this plantable paper and was able to use a friend's Cricut machine to cut the shapes. We will most likely hold onto all of the messages we received, but I still like the idea of planting some of the wishes and watching them grow into flowers and herbs!

To hold the blank leaves, I spray painted an old cigar box that had been passed down from my grandparents and filled the open lid with the saying "leaf a wish for the bride and groom," which I created with Photoshop and the same plantable paper. I am so happy with the way it turned out!

I still love to look through the messages that our friends and family left for us, and I know I always will.  Some were funny, others were thoughtful, and all of them were heartfelt. Here are a few of my favorites...

"Watch good sitcoms together, even if you're angry."

"In all the excitement of love and marriage, don't forget to stop and smell the roses. Those little moments of a look or an inside joke are the things that make marriage special."

"Pick your battles!"

"Just say YES (<--Advice to Aaron)... Also, really, just try to understand one another."

"If you're going to argue, DO IT NAKED!... it works wonders!"

"Time flies... so don't ever take one another for granted!"

"Find a reason to laugh together every day!"

"We wish for you to have passionate arguments & passionate love- because one without the other is nothing."

Deodorant doesn't have to be the pits!

It's easy enough to understand why the food we eat can potentially be bad for us, but too often we forget that the products we slather onto our skin are just as important. Deodorant, which most of us use on a daily basis, is a perfect example. A lot of brands claim to be "natural" but are nothing of the sort, and the ingredients that make most popular brands so effective are the ones we really need to keep an eye out for. I learned a lot during my own search for a truly natural underarm option.

Aluminum - This metal is the primary ingredient in many commercial deodorants, and it's used to fill your pores and literally block sweat (as well as the toxins that we want to get rid of) from leaving the body. Scientific research has recently shown a correlation between aluminum exposure and Alzheimer's Disease, and some experts believe that it can be linked to breast cancer as well. As unfortunate and uncomfortable as it can be sometimes, our bodies are supposed to sweat. Aluminum screws with what should be a natural occurrence.

Parabens - These synthetic hormones are used to prevent bacteria from growing in water-based products and they can be found in food as well as countless personal care items. It makes sense that a chemical that has the ability to kill living organisms could also set up camp and wreak havoc in our bodies, right? Parabens have been linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity, and skin irritation, just to name a few. Check ingredient lists for ethylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben if you're looking to avoid them.

Propylene Glycol - You might find this ingredient in your deodorant because it helps maintain moisture and consistency. While the FDA says that the chemical is "generally recognized as safe" for consumption, propylene glycol is commonly used as an antifreeze by chemical, food and pharmaceutical companies and it is also used as a solvent in the paint and plastics industries. How do you like the idea of that making its way through your bloodstream?

Pthalates - This stuff is everywhere. Pthalates are not only used as a lubricant in deodorant, but they can also be found in nail polish, vinyl flooring, rain coats, bug spray, IV drip bags, and about a gazillion other things that we come into contact with every day. I was saddened to learn that the new car smell that many of us enjoy is a direct result of this same substance. Pthalates are another known endocrine disruptor and have also been linked to birth defects.

Triclosan - Last, but certainly not least, is an ingredient that is classified as a pesticide and is used to prevent bacterial growth in our deodorant, toothpaste, and anti-bacterial soaps. Triclosan is another endocrine disruptor and is also causing harm to our water supplies and fragile ecosystems. There seems to be no scientific evidence that "anti-bacterial" products are beneficial to our health. Most of them include this ingredient and are doing more harm than good!

---

Most of us will go on to live a normal life regardless of the brand of deodorant that we're smearing under our arms, but I just can't stand the idea of knowingly increasing my risk of all that stuff and filling my body with chemicals that it wasn't designed to process. Luckily I've finally found a deodorant that works really well for me!

I ordered Primal Pit Paste in the lavender scent and my underarms have been naturally stank-free for about two weeks now. I've made it through running, Zumba classes, and 85 degree humidity with no cause for concern. The consistency is different when compared to your typical deodorant (obviously, because it doesn't have all of that fake crud in it) but it has been just as effective and I love how it smells. Plus, since this stuff is aluminum-free it wont leave those pesky yellow stains on your clothes. Bonus!

The only negative impact that this change has made on my lifestyle is a slightly higher cost. The hundreds of not-so-natural options that you'll find on most store shelves are inexpensive to produce because of the chemicals that are used in them. This is a perfect example of why cheaper is not always better. Personally, I'm happy to pay a higher price for quality ingredients that don't need to be researched by the CDC.

If you're thinking about ditching your deodorant but are convinced that a natural option wont be effective enough, my friend Mandy over at Sustainable Sass just wrote a great post about natural ways to reduce your need for deodorant in the first place. Some of her tips include drinking lots of water, increasing your intake of fruits and veggies, and exercising... all of which are things we should be doing more of anyway. Check out her blog! It's pretty great.

So what are your thoughts? Have you considered making the switch?

Juicy

This weekend Aaron and I watched the documentary "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" for the first time and loved it. We had been talking about buying a juicer for a while now and this film gave us even more reason to just do it already. I was out of the house and received this photo via text from Aaron. He had just purchased this juicer and filled our house with a health-inducing amount of produce.

And he's been making delicious concoctions ever since! I'm excited that we will be figuring out this juicing thing together and that he's just as into it as I am. Most of the recipes we've tried so far have been REALLY GOOD.

Cheers to health and awesome husbands.

Personal Bests

When I started running earlier this year I had the best of intentions and very little confidence. Until that time running had been sitting high up on the dusty shelf of things I'd started and never finished, and I was afraid it was destined to stay there forever. As soon as my feet hit the pavement I expected to hear a little voice in my head start to whisper reasons why I should quit, but this time that voice never showed up.

On Saturday I ran my first 5k. I had my family there to cheer me on and my friend Erica running by my side, which made this personal best even better. I know that I still have a long way to go in terms of improving my endurance, but for now I'm just thrilled to know that I can run three miles. This was the first time I truly felt like I earned the right to cross a finish line.

Since this occasion was a first for me we decided to pay the extra $3 for a t-shirt. I'm a sucker for souvenirs.

Don't you love the names? The Dewey Decimal Dash just slays me...

Based on recent temperatures I thought we would be running this race in shorts and a tank top, but we woke up to a 40-degree morning and had to bundle up instead. Honestly, I don't have the closet space to keep up with the weather in Michigan these days. Life is just full of surprises, isn't it?

We did it!

Twenty six

My late twenties have arrived. These past several weeks have been a parade of challenges to say the least, to the point that I've started to wonder what I did to upset the universe. I'm slowly starting to realize that these road blocks are not an indication that my life is coming to an end, but rather a gentle reminder of all there is to be grateful for. Here, in no particular order, are a few of the reasons why I'm smiling on my twenty-sixth birthday...

+Right now it is 60 degrees and sunny, which is always my ultimate birthday present.

+This is my first birthday as a business owner, which means working outside as much as possible.

+I'm starting to carve some meaning into what I do every day and where I want to take my business, and that has been a really good feeling.

+Last night I went to the Melting Pot for a birthday celebration with my friend Lindsey, who is exactly one week older than me. Instead of buying each other gifts for birthdays and Christmas we go out for cheese, chocolate and wine twice a year. We're pretty fond of our fondue tradition.

+We finally have a fenced in back yard (no thanks to the tree that fell on it yesterday).

+I am feeling stronger and healthier than ever before, just in time to run my first 5K this weekend!

+I have finally found a low maintenance hair style that I really love. I'm sure part of it has to do with feeling more confident in general these days, but still... Total win.

+Today is the one day that Facebook surrounds me with love from my friends and family instead of ads, politics and invitations to try ovulation calculators. --I appreciate your interest in my uterus, Mark Zuckerberg. Is this your way of telling me you'll accept my first born child as payment for ad space?

+I'm feeling excited for Summer 2.0 at our house. This year we're planning more gardening, more barbecuing, more bonfires, and possibly an at-home camping experience.

+Tonight I will be celebrating with my parents and a dear friend at a new local restaurant that I have been wanting to try for months now. I'm lucky to get to spend part of my actual birthday with three of the people who make my life better every day!

+I belong to an incredible band of friends with whom I can share my past, present and future.

+I have a husband who does his best to love me 365 days a year, no matter what, and who can't stand to wait until my birthday to give me presents. He can't keep a secret unless it's classified by the government (no, for real), but it's really fun to see him be so excited to give.

+We have two expensive beautiful dogs who brighten our days and who teach us as much as we teach them.

+Life has never felt more rewarding than it does right this very moment.

On second thought, I really can't wait to see what comes next...
